MicroWorlds 1.0 - DOS

If you have any questions that are not answered here, you can always call us at (800) 321-5646, or, better yet, e-mail us at [email protected].

Note: we strongly suggest that you do not use this version of MicroWorlds under Win 95.

Q. When trying to launch MicroWorlds in Windows 3.1, a window opens up but closes right away.

A. Exit Windows and try running MicroWorlds in DOS. You should see an error message. Locate this error message in this document.

Q. When launching MicroWorlds, I get a message that says "Microworlds requires a mouse", but I have one!

A. Since MicroWorlds is a DOS program, it needs a DOS mouse driver. Locate the mouse driver on your system (it's usually called "mouse.com") and add a line in your autoexec.bat file to load it. e-mail us for complete instructions.

Q. I get a message that says "MicroWorlds requires 512K of conventional memory".

A. You need to run memmaker DOS 6.6 and up in order to optimize the way your drivers are loaded. At the DOS prompt, type in:
memmaker/batch and follow the on-screen directions.

Q. I get a message that says "MicroWorlds requires 512K of XMS" or "MicroWorlds requires 512K of extended memory".

A. Your computer is set up to give you expanded memory (as opposed to extended memory). In your config.system file, change the EMM386 line to read:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS

Be aware that some programs do require expanded memory in order to run. In this case, you might have to create a boot disk to run MicroWorlds.

Q. When launching MicroWorlds, I get no picture, or the picture is garbled, or my computer freezes up or crashes.

A. MicroWorlds is having trouble identifying your video card.

* If your video card is VGA (as opposed to SVGA), you can force MicroWorlds to start up in VGA mode by launching it with the /V switch: MW/V.

* If you have a SVGA video card, check with your manual (or your manufacturor or vendor) to see if it supports the VESA standard. If it does, load the VESA driver before launching MicroWorlds (your manual should tell you how to do this).

Q. MicroWorlds crashes at startup.

A. You might be using a non-Microsoft mouse driver. MicroWorlds was designed to work with a Microsoft mouse, and other brands might cause unpredictable behaviour. You need a Microsoft compatible version 8 or higher mouse driver.

Q. I don't get any sound when using MicroWorlds in DOS.

A. Your computer might have a non-Sound Blaster card installed. MicroWorlds was designed to work with a Sound Blaster sound card, and other brands might cause unpredictable behaviour. Your "Sound Blaster compatible" sound card may not truly be "compatible".

If you do have a (true) Sound Blaster card installed, make sure your "SOUND" and "BLASTER" global variables are defined in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Q. When trying to launch MicroWorlds in Windows 3.x, I get an error message that says "The KB value required is too high. Decrease the PIF value."

A. MicroWorlds requires 512K of conventional memory, and your computer has less than that amount of memory available. Exit windows, and, at the DOS prompt, type in:
memmaker/batch and follow the on-screen directions.

This should free up some memory for MicroWorlds to run in.

Q. I can't find my printer in the list.

A. Try different printers from the same manufacturer. If none of them work, you may want to consider upgrading to the MicroWorlds for Windows 95 version.

Q. I'm using MicroWorlds under Windows 3.11. When I try to open (or save) a project, I can't see some of my disks in the File Dialog.

A. This is caused by an incompatibility between MicroWorlds, certain disk controllers and the 32-bit file access setting in Windows 3.11.

Do the following:

Open the "Main" program group.
Open the "Control Panels".
Click on "Enhanced".
Click on "Virtual Memory".
Click on "Change".
Disable 32-bit file access (remove the "x" in the box).
